National Physical Therapy Month

National Physical Therapy Month

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) celebrates National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) each October to recognize the impact that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants make. The theme of the 2013 NPTM is fit after 50!

Baby Boomers make up one of the largest populations in the US an astounding 78 million people! This generation of boomers are more educated, tech savvy, and concerned about their wellness and mobility more than any prior aging generation. They are redefining what it means to be aging in the US making staying fit after 50 such an excellent theme for NPTM this year!

Staying fit after 50 can be challenging for all baby boomers as they age, from the loss of flexibility, strength, and balance. Physical Therapists help in fight these challenges by educating their patients in the many ways that they can build strength, maximize movement and mobility, and maintain optimal fitness while reducing risk of injuries.

Did you know that 7 out of 10 adults over 50 years old are physically active? Unfortunately, almost 2.5 million baby boomers end up in the emergency room from over exercising. Physical Therapists can help prevent common injuries such as tendonitis, back pain, frozen shoulder, meniscus tears, and broken bones. Preventative Physical Therapy can save baby boomers from the financial burden of unexpected out of pocket expenses, and the physical and emotional suffering in having a chronic condition. With boomers having an average of two medical conditions such as hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes, physical therapy plays a vital role in helping them maintain an active lifestyle.

At Cross Bay Physical Therapy our Physical Therapists are experts in restoring and improving motion in people's lives. Each patient will receive one-on-one, hands-on care that will help them achieve results, and in many cases avoid surgery and the long-term use of prescription medications. We also offer comprehensive physical therapy that includes, balance training, fall prevention, stroke rehabilitation, sports injury and arthritic care therapy. Join us for a lecture on the importance of balance and how to properly use a cane November 26th 10:30am at the Ozone Park Senior Center, and again on December 3rd 10:30am at the Howard Beach Senior Center.
